Meet the people: Amy Clarke, Designer
What do you love about your job?
Johnson Tiles is a brand that’s really going places. There is huge excitement in the air, as we develop new products, seek out innovations and really push our skills to the absolute limits. We’re given such creative freedom, and that makes every day an exciting challenge. And with the chance to be heavily involved with the entire design process, it’s such a sense of achievement to see our hard work turn into a beautiful finished product.
Any projects you’re especially proud of?
I was part of the team that designed the new Arabesque range. That was an amazing experience that involved lots of running around, seeking inspiration and compiling ideas to create something completely new.
What’s your favourite product by Johnson Tiles?
It would have to be Tones. I love the format, the sizes and shades. It’s such a versatile product. You can create just about anything you want with it.
Who inspires you?
Tricia Guild is pretty high up there. She not only founded the Designers Guild, but her work is also hugely inspirational. She’s renowned for her paisley and floral designs – but just recently she’s doing a lot more geometric type stuff. I really love that she’s moved with the times and is still breaking boundaries.
Tell us a bit more about yourself
I’ve been with Johnson Tiles for over three years now and have loved every minute. I joined the company after graduating from Staffordshire University with a degree in Surface Pattern. I live in Stafford with my boyfriend, who also happens to work in the tile industry – how random is that!
When you’re not working, what do you enjoy doing?
I’m completely and utterly obsessed with Pinterest. I’ll use it for everything. To pull together ideas for when I’m back in the studio, to seek inspiration for my home – I’m even using it to plan my own wedding! I never seem to stop designing!
What’s currently on your playlist?
I can’t get enough of The Script, plus I seem to be digging out a lot of Alanis Morissette and Pink Floyd. It’s nice to be nostalgic now and again.
What book are you reading?
‘Beautiful Creatures’, by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl.
