Design Team: ‘Ones to Watch’ at New Designers Part Two 2016
Hot on the heels of New Designers Part One (29 June – 2 July) followed Part Two of the event (6 – 9 July), where our Design Team was once again tasked with awarding the Johnson Tiles Associate Prize to the most innovative graduate designer in exhibition. No easy feat with such an impressive array of talent on show.

‘One Year On’
Rachel Howarth
Rachel’s work truly stood out in the ‘One Year On’ section of New Designers Part Two. Her aluminium panels inspired by modern geometrics and architectural inspiration reflect the light at different angles to create the feeling of movement.
Rachel exhibited her textile collection at Part One of New Designers two years ago, and has now developed it further to include cushions, aluminium panels and wall art. Rachel's signature colour palette of blue tones is inspired by the sky reflecting on to architectural buildings.

Outstanding designers:
Veega Tankun
Veega’s work fuses traditional textile techniques, including hand crochet and machine knit, with furniture, to create the ultimate sense of comfort.
Janey Speers
Janey creates marble pendants as part of her material-driven project, which uses the exportation of resin for a high-end finish. The colour palette, form and texture all take inspiration from confectionary.

Adam Huxley-Khng
Adam was awarded a Johnson Tiles ‘Adores’ rosette after his work impressed our judging panel. His engaging project comprised a series of lights inspired by movement. Creating a subtle, multi-sensory experience, both colour and light outputs are altered through controlled interaction.

After much deliberation, James Vanderpant of Brighton University was awarded the accolade for his Helios project. However there were plenty of other designers that caught the Design Team’s attention. Here is part two of our ‘ones to watch’…
Johnson Tiles Adores:
Josh James
Josh was awarded a Johnson Tiles ‘Adores’ rosette after his work made an impact on our team. Displaying an intriguing process and overall product, which comprised a kit for turning recyclable plastics into everyday objects and surfaces, Josh offers the ability to produce colourful and environmentally friendly objects in the home.
