Design Team: Announcing our award winners of Staffordshire University brief

Six weeks have passed since our Design Team delivered a creative brief to the surface pattern students of Staffordshire University. This week, Amy and Maria visited the group once again to select their winning designs.

Highly Commended on Use of Media: Rebecca Rawlins

“We loved the subject matter of leaf textures and the use of mixed media, with Rebecca exploring this through an eye-catching collection with tactile quality. We were very impressed.”

Highly Commended on Commercial Awareness: Hope Gwilliams

“Throughout Hope’s project there was a strong understanding of commercial awareness, which was reflected in the final tile collection. Very well done.”

Well done to all of the winners, our Design Team has thoroughly enjoyed working with the students on this brief, bearing witness to fantastic innovation and flair.

Third Place: Francesca Hoyle

“We loved Francesca’s water and ink theme to capture various textures for her collection. We both felt it was a very original and interesting approach.”

Francesca will have her collection printed onto tile – congratulations, Francesca!

Second Place: Natalie Willay

“Natalie truly stood out with a strong theme and colour palette for her tile collection – using on-trend geometric linear patterns to create a patchwork feel, with a contemporary edge.”

Natalie will have her collection printed onto tile – congratulations, Natalie!

Winner: Sarah Craggs

“We chose Sarah as our winner, as we felt she answered the brief excellently and displayed a high standard throughout her work, resulting in a highly commercial tile collection. With an intriguing theme of ‘new vintage’, she explored glass-cut patterns to create her designs, using on-trend soft tones.”

Sarah will receive a one-week work placement at Johnson Tiles, and a visit to London’s Material Lab. Congratulations, Sarah!

After a fun-filled day, it appeared choosing the winners would be a difficult task, with the students displaying passion and versatility across the field of surface pattern design. However, there were some final projects that truly caught Amy and Maria’s attention. Here we announce and congratulate the winners:
